History

Cross country competition featured at South American Athletics Championships until 1950. However, the separate championships started in 1986 as Athletics Sudamericana (CONSUDATLE) organized its very own cross-country championships.

The inaugural South American XC held in city of San Carlos de Bariloche which is situated near to Argentina-Chile border at Rio Negro province, with the participation of 28 athletes from four countries. The first large-scale event took place in February 1993 in Cali as 89 athletes competed in six different races including age groups. In 1994, British Mike O'Really became the first guest runner at the South American XC.

When Pan American XC starts in 2015, CONSUDATLE counted best three names amongst South American contestants at the events, as "South American medallists". Meanwhile, starting from 2016, every odd year South American medallists extracted from Pan-Am events.
