History

Spartakiad was a Soviet type Olympiad during USSR era. Inaugurated in 1956 before Melbourne Games, finalized in Kiev 1991, the year Soviet Union collapsed. 

Spartakiad traditionally held in Moscow's monumental Lenin Stadium - except last two editions, and always contested by best athletes from all Soviet Republics. Every Soviet republic competed in the games with their own teams while mainland Russia generally represented by three seperate teams: Moscow, Leningrad and "rest of Russia". Foreign athletes allowed to compete in Spartakiad first time in 1979, including United Stated send to Moscow a team, including young Carl Lewis. 

Spartakiad also served as USSR National Championships in the year held, but only 1986 season Soviet athletes contested for national titles in different event.
