A new sprint export from South Africa, Bayanda Walaza, secured his second gold medal at the World U20 Champs in Lima. The 18-year-old schoolboy became the only fourth man to complete a sprint double at the event and the first since 1998 feat by Briton Christian Malcolm.
Walaza got off with a good start in lane 7 in the final as he took an advantage in the curve. He pushed up to extend the lead as Australia's 16-year-old sensation Gout Gout came closer to the finish line; however, the South African completed the race in 20.52 secs.
In the women's 200 metres final, Adaejah Hodge of British Virgin Islands secured the gold medal by beating Aussie hopeful Torrie Lewis. Hodge who was 2022 CARIFTA Games Sealy Award winner, has proved herself as a future star with two medals at the championships.
Kenyan star Mary Moraa's cousin Sarah claimed the 800 metres gold as Ethiopia's Berhanu Ayansa took men's crown for same distance, both have outclassed Australian rivals as well. With four silvers on the same day, the Oceanian nation increased the total medals to 10 in Lima.
However, United States medal haul changed the top of the standings in day four. The Americans won men's 110m hurdles and high jump and women's shot, putting them first place in the table.
