Former World U20 champion hammer thrower Silja Kosonen won the European Cup title in Winter Throws as she broke the Finnish record.
The talented Finn hammer thrower Silja Kosonen continues her progress as she claimed Finland's first senior title at the Winter Throws since 2001. She started the contest by breaking her national record by 16 centimetres (75.61) before establishing the world lead, 77.07 in the final attempt. Kosonen became the only 15th woman to pass the 77-metres barrier in history. Kosonen also established the biggest margin to victory at the event by having more than four metres (4.20m) over silver-medallist Rose Loga of France.
Serbian thrower Adriana Vilagos won the javelin throw with a brilliant effort. The 21-year-old registered three marks, better than the nearest rival, and broke the Serbian record with a superb 66.88m throw. Vilagos reached five medals in the event and claimed each color of medal at the seniors level in the last three years.
In the other seniors event on the women's side, Sweden's Vanessa Kamga and Portugal's Jessica Inchude were crowned as the cup winners. Kamga won the women's discus by recording 63.25m to defeating former champion Liliana Ca of Portugal, who registered only two valid attempts while she finished second in 62.66. In the shot put, Jessica Inchude reclaimed the title back as she added three centimetres of her personal best in the very last throw of 19.21 metres.
The unexpected surprise of the weekend came in men's discus contest. The championship record holder Kristjan Ceh of Slovenia was the pre-favorite for the win but lost to German Henrik Janssen. Ceh recorded three marks over 65 metres but his best mark of 65.69 just came short by eight centimetres of Jansen's 65.77 metres, which marked the first German victory in men's discus since 2013. Meanwhile, Jansen's compatriot Steven Richter completed his hat-trick in U23 discus despite finishing with his lowest winning mark.
In the opening discipline of the Throwing Cup, the Cypriot prospect Iosif Kesidis who won world U20 title last year, added 27cm to his personal best with 72.50m during hammer throw U23 contest. Kesidis became the first Cypriot to win a European Throwing Cup title.
