Biography
One of India's foremost women athletes in the 1980s.
She attended four Olympic Games starting from 1984 consecutively; three Asian Games, six Asian Championships and seven SAF Games apart from several other international meetings. Although she didn't win any medals at any of the four Olympics, Los Angeles 1984 was a display of India's woman-power in athletics. Shiny Abraham's performance which took her to the semi-final in the 800m race (a first for India), the quartet - Usha, Shiny, Valsamma and Vandana -making it to the summit round in the 4x400m relay (yet another first for India) was a milestone for the country.
Shiny Abraham-Wilson represented her nation more than 75 times in international competitions and has won 67 medals. She holds the added distinction of representing Asia in four World Cups. She has been a National Champion in 800m for 14 years and is also the only athlete to have taken part in six Asian Champs in a row beginning 1985.
She collected a total of 18 gold and two silver medals from the seven South Asian Federation (SAF) Meetings she has attended.

TRIVIA
♦ Shiny became interested in athletics as a child but developed her skills after joining the sports division in Kottayam.
♦ Clocked the career-best time in the 800m at the Chennai SAF Games in 1995 with breaking the 2-minute barrier for the first time in the Indian Athletics history. She won the event in 1m 59.8s and achieved it after becoming a mother.
♦ First Indian Women athlete to reach the semi-finals in Olympics in women's 800m.
♦ First Indian woman captain and the first woman to be the flag bearer for India at the Olympics, in 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
♦ Awarded the Arjuna Award in 1985, the Birla Award in 1996 and the Padma Shri in 1998.
♦ A recipient of the Chinese Journalists Award 1991 for being one of the Top Ten Athletes of Asia.
♦ Married with three children to former swimmer, Cherian Wilson. Employed as General Manager (Sports) with food corporation of India.
